One of the toughest and most physically demanding projects I’ve ever worked on, partly due to the difficult conditions in the country we were documenting: poor hygiene, extreme poverty, and contaminated food.

But the real challenge came when we discovered that the very purpose of our journey — documenting the tribes — was, to a large extent, a staged experience created for tourism.

We therefore had to completely rethink our approach at the last minute, transforming the project into a deeper and more unconventional exploration of the darker side of tourism in the country. At the same time, it was essential to approach the story with care and respect, preserving the dignity of the people we encountered and documenting reality without exploiting it.

For this reason, the documentary’s post-production took months: shaping a coherent narrative from hundreds of hours of footage, while finding the right balance between information, impact and respect.

The result is an unconventional perspective on a remote corner of the world that remains, to this day, largely unknown.

Uno dei lavori più duri e fisicamente impegnativi che abbia mai realizzato, anche a causa delle condizioni difficili del Paese che ci ospitava: scarsa igiene, condizioni di estrema povertà e cibo contaminato.

Ma la vera difficoltà è arrivata alla scoperta che il motivo stesso del viaggio — documentare le tribù — fosse, in larga parte, una messa in scena costruita per il turismo.

È stato quindi fondamentale cambiare approccio all’ultimo minuto e trasformare il progetto in un racconto più profondo e inedito del lato oscuro del turismo in questo Paese. Allo stesso tempo, era essenziale farlo con attenzione e rispetto, preservando la dignità delle persone che abbiamo incontrato e raccontando la realtà senza sfruttarla.

Proprio per questo, la post-produzione del documentario è durata mesi: dare una forma coerente a una storia così complessa, lavorando su centinaia di ore di footage e cercando il giusto equilibrio tra informazione, impatto e rispetto.

Il risultato è una prospettiva inedita su un angolo di mondo di cui, ancora oggi, si conosce essenzialmente pochissimo.
